Therapeutic
Process and
Relationship

Psychotherapy can provide an arena for assessment, communication, support, integration, and/or change. Both client and clinician participate in the therapeutic process. Consideration of your reasons for seeking treatment, your therapeutic goals, and your evaluation of your change process will help focus the clinical work. Part of my role is to assess the nature and severity of the issues presented, my available skills and/or resources, and to make referrals to additional or alternative resources when necessary. Whether the presented concerns indicate crisis intervention, brief goal-directed counseling, or in-depth therapy, my intent is to offer safety, presence, support, perspective, and a relational context which I hope will help you navigate the change process.

I utilize approaches and techniques which integrate cognitive, affective, behavioral, experiential, physical, and spiritual components. I frequently draw upon ideas developed by Virginia Satir; the Structural and Strategic schools of family therapy; and the Somatic Experiencing® approach to trauma recovery.

Satir focused upon communication patterns, self-esteem, defense mechanisms, the influence of one's family-of-origin, and transformation. Her approach is mindful and experiential and applies to individuals, couples, groups, families, and organizations. The Structural and Strategic models advocate brief, goal-directed, interactive work with couples and families and also employ intentional, experiential strategies for change.

The Somatic Experiencing® method developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine is a physiologically-oriented approach to trauma healing and recovery which seeks to restore resiliency throughout the individual system.
